Elmar Bonaccurso studied Electronic Engineering (1992-1998) at the University of Genova (Italy), where he obtained his diploma with Prof. M. Grattarola working on ISFET-based pH sensors. Afterwards he worked two years (1998-2000) at the Institute of Microtechnology GmbH in Mainz as a research associate, and specialized in the production of Atomic Force Microscopy sensors. In 2000 he joined the group of Prof. H.-J. Butt at the University of Mainz first and then at the University of Siegen, where he was awarded the PhD by the end of 2001 working on hydrodynamic and electrokinetic interactions between colloidal particles. As a Max-Planck postdoctoral fellow in 2002 he worked on the micro-structuring of polymer surfaces by the use of plasmas and solvents. As a Marie-Curie postdoctoral fellow in 2003-2004 he continued this work and started to be interested in the evaporation kinetics of solvent microdrops from solid surfaces. He spent part of his fellowship in the Biophysics and Nanotechnology Group lead by Prof. R. Raiteri at the University of Genova, investigating mechanical properties of muscle cells and synaptic vesicles by means of Atomic Force Microscopy. He rejoined the group of Prof. H.-J. Butt at the MPI-P in 2004 as a group research leader and worked on the evaporation kinetics of microdrops from soluble and non-soluble surfaces, on non-conventional microstructuring of polymer surfaces, and on hydrodynamics and slipping phenomena of liquids in contact with solid surfaces. He accomplished his Habilitation at the University of Mainz by the end of 2008. He joined the Center of Smart Interfaces of the Technical University of Darmstadt in May 2010. He leads the Experimental Interface Physics Group and is the research area coordinator of the Static and Dynamic Wettability cluster.
